VHL collaborate with Partners To Petition The National 54th Legislature Of Liberia For Open Parliamentary Proceeding

In commemoration of the Global Open Parliament Day celebration, Volunteers Hub Liberia joined advocacy partners in Monrovia to petition the National 54th Legislature of Liberia for Open Parliamentary Proceeding on September 27, 2019. In improving openness, accountability and transparency within the legislative branch of the Liberia government, the collaborating CSOs headed by the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) is calling on both houses of the legislature to act in accordance with the world parliamentary body to adopt the declaration on parliamentary openness and ensure greater legislative accountability and citizens access to information. Reading the petition, Christopher Section, a member of the collaborating CSOs said that the petition is in line with the global calls for parliament to adopt the declaration on parliamentary openness, which was adopted by Parliamentary Monitoring Stakeholders on September 15, 2012 of the International Day of Democracy head in Rome, Italy.
Receiving the Petition, the Chairperson on Claims, Petition and Human Rights and the Representative of District 4, Montserrado County, Hon. Rustonlyn Suakoko Dennis informed the petitioners that she will make sure to present the petition on the floor of the plenary on the same date she received the petition. In addition to her remakes, she noted that for a democracy to be successful, there should be transparency, which she quoted as saying, “One of the pillars of a successful democracy is transparency, in the absence of transparency, we cannot have a solid democratic state.”
